Aladdin and COVID-19 By Mia Dessner
We all know the story of Aladdin but here’s Aladdin in a whole new way. Let’s go back to one of the most famous scenes of the whole movie, the carpet ride. Aladdin asks Jasmine, “Do you trust me?” Jasmine says, “I’m not sure why but yes.” They go on a great ride looking at such beautiful views having a wonderful time. But then all of a sudden they start spinning turning all the colors of the world are crashing and mixing like an abstract painting. Then they start falling and they stop. They are in their hometown. Everything is the same except everyone is wearing a mask. At the fruit market they say take an apple and a free pump of hand sanitizer.
Aladdin drops Jasmine at the palace but the guards held a sign that says, “Please wear a mask.” Jasmine said, “Well that’s new.” Aladdin asked the guards if they can come in without a mask but the guards said no. “It’s 2020 you need-” but Aladdin did not wait for him to finish “2020 it’s 1999,” said Aladdin. “We wish. That’s when life was normal, but I still can’t let you in without a mask,” said the guard. Just then Jasmine cut in when she had enough of this nonsense and said, “I am Jasmine princess of Agrabah now let us in,” she scolded. “I would,” said the guard, “If you had a mask.” Aladdin and Jasmine head back to the market where a lady is holding a tray of masks and saying, “Masks get your masks only $20 dollars a mask.” Aladdin and Jasmine could not refuse because they needed one to get home. So Aladdin went up to the lady and said, “Two masks please.” The lady said that will be $40 dollars. Aladdin said quietly under his breath, “Geez everything is so expensive in this year.”
Aladdin came back with two masks and Aladdin and Jasmine headed back to the palace wearing their masks. The guard let them in and they headed to their rooms. On Aladdin’s bed was the lamp. He rubbed it and out came the Genie wearing a mask. Aladdin asked Genie what’s going on. Genie said, “Its COVID-19.” Aladdin was very confused and headed over to Jasmine’s room and said, “There’s something called COVID-19.” Aladdin asked Genie, “Where is the Sultan?” Genie told him how he is out on a business trip and the only way to get in touch with him is to call or text. Aladdin had no idea what a text was so he asked where the nearest pay phone was. “Are you stuck in the 19-hundreds just use your cell phone,” said Genie. Aladdin picked up the phone, started pressing on it and banging on it then Genie took it pressed a button on the side and it turned on. Genie then clicked on some numbers and something they call apps appeared. Genie did not trust Aladdin with it anymore so he clicked on a button that had a phone on it. All of a sudden it started ringing but Sultan did not pick up and Aladdin tried again but nothing. He had to figure out how to get back to 1999.
Genie all of the sudden said, “The only way to get back is to convince the princess to marry you,” in a deep creepy voice that made Aladdin feel very spooked he thought his heart was gonna pop. That night Aladdin made a very romantic dinner for Jasmine. Jasmine came down in a very pretty dress that made her look more beautiful than all the stars in the night sky. Over dinner they just talked about little things like how Rajah ate something that made her feel sick and how the Genie was being his usual Genie self. Then out of nowhere Aladdin proposed. Jasmine went speechless. Aladdin said, “You’re the girl for me, marry me.” Jasmine said nothing and ran away. The next morning at breakfast Jasmine apologized for last night. Then she said, “Yes I will marry you.” Then everything started spinning again and another abstract painting was made and they were back soaring on the magic carpet. But the only problem is they forgot what just happened—everyone did except Aladdin. He was heartbroken they were not getting married. But he knew it was for the best and the world kept turning and life went on. This might not have been a happily ever after that you hear in the books but it was to them.
